NBC’s charity special All Together Now: A Celebration of Service last night, honoring former President George H.W. Skywalker Bush, bombed almost worse than George W. Bush’s costume spectacular special Mission Accomplished back in 2003, but not quite.
The special, which no one’s really sure was about, but it probably had something to do with honoring Americans with live performances from Grammy winners instead of empty gesture vehicle magnets, also included former President Bill Clinton as he co-chaired the event. Former President Jimmy Carter, taking time away from saving the people of the world, also attended to look bemused on camera during featured performances by Cee Lo Green, Garth Brooks, Sheryl Crow, Kid Rock (?) and Carrie Underwood.
We asked our Unsolicited Drivel media analyst why the show was received about as well as a Baghdad car bomb and he told us, “Even President Obama knew enough not to try and compete with Dancing With the Stars and planned his Libya speech to appease no Americans for 7:30pm. NBC should have just found a better time slot – like, maybe 3AM. It was also probably extremely unsettling to viewers who accidentally tuned in to see George W. Bush on camera mouthing the words along with Carrie Underwood to the song ‘Instant Karma,’ because if there ever was a person who had no concern about what goes around coming around, it would most certainly be him.”
