Kind of makes you realize what a crock of shit these awards are when they ignore the chance to memorialize two entertainers like these. Both Bea Arthur and Farrah Fawcett may have been more familiar on the small screen, but they also appeared in films. Bea originated the role of Vera Charles in the musical “Mame,” and played the part on stage and screen. I will always remember our extremely inept director in our college production of “Mame” who advised our own Vera, “you know Bea Arthur? Well, act like her!!!” Our Vera, Louise, came up with her own very successful characterization, because after all, there was only ONE Bea Arthur. And "Maude" still holds up. Farrah appeared in maybe a handful of films on the big screen, but anyone at the Academy remember “The Apostle?!?” She really shined on the small screen and I would highly recommend aside from her more popular TV films like “The Burning Bed,” fans should look for “Murder in Texas,” and her Barbara Hutton biopic, “Poor Little Rich Girl.” I won’t touch much on how “The Wiz” sucked, which I suppose was the reasoning behind including Michael Jackson in lieu of these two Hollywood legends. No offense to MJ, but Diana Ross was about 20 years too old for the role of Dorothy, which made the film, well - lame. And Nipsey Russell should have stayed on “Match Game.” Getting back into silly mode, I present to you my most favorite example of the gigantic talent that was Bea Arthur. The Academy can go suck it.
