Taxing Our Fat?
Chicago – Researchers in the U.S. have estimated that an approximate 18% “snack tax” could go much farther to reduce obesity rates than the old standby, nutritional education, probably ever could. These scientists believe that a tax on items such as soda, pizza, Ring Dings, Doritos and Little Debbie’s and possibly even Swedish Fish, which, despite what people think, never even had the healthy Omega 3s, could lower the weight of the average American who hates to pay taxes by as much as five pounds per year. With nearly two-thirds of Americans overweight, or obese, they believe the Federal Government should look at a drastic measure such as this. A spokesperson from the Centers for Disease Control added, “the weight loss involved in avoiding overly taxed foods will not be an issue for Americans who ate sensibly to begin with. It will only be a problem for those who feel they should never be taxed on anything at all, like the Tea Partiers. Unfortunately, by the time they need a doctor’s care for their anorexia into their old age, social programs to help them like Medicaid will already be broke.”
