It suddenly became “soapbox Wednesday,” and I’d like to give Senator Ben Nelson (D.) Nebraska an extra special award...and his dubious honor would be for being the most OBVIOUS example of a Republican masquerading as a Democrat.
Nelson is scheduled to speak before the conservative Heritage Institute today to make a case for renewing the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest 2% - until the economy improves. Now, just to review again – we couldn’t afford them back when George W. proposed them to distract Americans from the fact that he was more interested in clearing brush in Crawford than doing his job, and we can afford them MUCH less now.
Even Ronald Reagan’s leading economist, budget director David Stockman, has slammed the idea stating, “IF there were such a thing as Chapter 11 for politicians, the Republican push to extend the unaffordable Bush tax cuts would amount to a bankruptcy filing.” You would think that they (the GOP) would listen to King Reagan’s advisor, because Reagan practically wrote the book on making (sneaky/unaffordable) tax cuts (to build cult-like party loyalty) that nobody would notice were a disaster for years to come, but you would be wrong.
I complained to a pal recently that I no longer really cared if a politician was liberal or conservative – I just want them to be RATIONAL. And I thought I (not knowing how to add or subtract) was hell on a budget!
