Don't Be Afraid of the Plot

Remember that TV movie from the 70s about a housewife who saw little people running around her house and they lived in the furnace and it scared the crap out of ya? Well this is the remake of that movie. On the plus side: Guillermo Del Toro, the visionary filmmaker who created the fantasy worlds for Pan's Labrynth and Hellboy II, returns to create yet another fantasy world, this time set in an ancient Rhode Island mansion surround by lush forest, fountains, and... a labrynth. The special effects are also very good. On the minus side: just about everything else. From Guy Pearce's wooden performance as "The Dad Who Never Believes Anything the Daughter Says Until It's Too Late" to Katie Holmes' wooden performance as "The Girl Who Gets Roles Because She's Tom Cruise's Wife," the movie lacks any believable performances to get us to care about the characters. The best of the bunch is newcomer Bailee Madison as the little girl who sees the "creatures" that infest the house, although the inexplicable plot twists that happen through her make her hard to root for (she first opens the furnace to let the little creatures out, and then is scared by them, and then easily falls asleep with them in the house). If you just want a silly movie with a few scare moments, this'll do the trick. If you want to really be scared though, check out the original movie, starring Kim Darby.

I saw the movie, WITH you, and I would have to say the best part was Katie Holmes' bathrobe. Kind of a noveaux kimono in rust tones which matched the crazy house.

Yes, if the movie had stopped there, would have been better. Then I could have run home and watched some old eps of Law and Order
