The State of the Union Address – Our Readers Respond

Washington, DC – President Obama delivered his much-anticipated State of the Union address last night, and this morning we take a look at the reactions.

Some critics say Obama wasn’t lively enough. MSNBC’s morning steaming pile of Joe even offered:

"The energy was down, the president seemed tepid and there's no doubt that about 10 or 15 minutes into it, he sensed that," Scarborough said. "I've never seen an audience as flat or a president as flat as this...it was just boring all around."

We asked our readers here at U.D. for comment about SOTU and here is what they told us:

“I think before we can concentrate on ‘Winning the Future,’ we should go back and examine how we chose to lose the past, when we paid about as much attention to the essentials involved in guaranteeing our country’s vital future as a hooker on crystal meth does to the possibility of her ever cashing in her 401k.”

“Not really clear on what he meant by our 'Sputnik Moment.'  Has AT&T finally stopped f#%king up transmitting the iPhone signal?”

“I don’t want to hear criticisms about Obama being ‘boring’ from the media. The last two guys as president weren’t boring and one nearly bankrupted our country with two self-serving wars on a whim, and the other one inadvertently undid all of his good deeds due to the media’s obsession with his B.J., - which also killed Olbermann's career at MSNBC the first time around, BTW.”

“I was kind of bummed that Obama didn’t get into the gun control argument. Every day it does not become a priority for our government officials to regulate guns makes it difficult for me to not to have thoughts about those violent gun toting advocates, and how I have to control my urges to club them with a Louisville Slugger over their blatant disregard for human life, as I don’t approve of firearms of ANY kind.”

“I wish he’d been on board for not extending the tax cuts for the rich two months ago, but then again, I can’t look a gift horse in the mouth, as I’ll still be employed as a limo driver until at least 2012.”

"I have to confess - I watched Joan Rivers torment her only daughter into MANY more years of therapy on 'We TV' instead."

“Obama’s success has always been dependent on his coming off as the rational voice, so he probably didn’t mind that he had not one, but TWO Republicans offering rebuttals with NO solutions last night. Bachmann wants to be fiscally responsible by cutting the Department of Education so kids can’t grow up to find jobs with a living wage (?!?) and Paul Ryan rails against the upcoming vote to raise deficit when Congress raised the debt limit for Bush SEVEN times to fund his wars and his cronies. Nobody takes Bachmann seriously, but in regard to the rest of the GOP, if Obama campaigns on the “Never had, and never will suffer from selective Amnesia” ticket, he’ll probably be just fine for 2012.”
