Please be advised dear readers - don't think I go around boycotting this and that all of the time out of political principle, because that is not true. I only boycott the hypocritical or nonsensical. So, this Sunday night, as I was all jazzed for the “Desperate Housewives” season finale (eh, okay, I guess), it was “Brothers & Sisters” that got more of my attention and really pissed me off to boot.
I don’t give a crap about the fictional Walker family or any of their ilk. I don’t get all warm and fuzzy because Nora is liberal and being the matriarch, gets to trump Kitty’s conservative opinions. I only watched it because I’ve liked to watch them argue after too much wine in the past. But tonight, the show sent a destructive message in their season ender, in my humble opinion.
In the offensive episode, they gave the impression that Kitty’s campaign for senator, or congressperson, or whatever the eff she’s running for this week, could be DESTROYED by the media who uncovered the fact that she paid over four grand for her wig she wore on her Gollum-like head during chemotherapy. I don’t think that their fear was that she could be construed as stupid, only mind-numbingly vain. Plus, if you watched it all season, you know she looked like crap when she wore that straw looking skullcap.
So, if that was a wig the actress was wearing, not only were they totally ripped off, I am here to tell you from first hand experience, that if you go through chemo, you can look like a beauty queen compared to the way she looked for upwards of $75 bucks (see: Rachel Welch wigs). I can’t imagine how many recently diagnosed female cancer patients felt even more like total shit after watching that show tonight. I know what that feels like, and I have fooled plenty of people while being bald as a cue ball - including my own father, who not recognizing me with new hair, was kind enough to introduce himself to me at my mother’s funeral.
I DO NOT APPRECIATE this show sending a message to cancer victims that they cannot look human for less than four grand. And I also DO NOT appreciate them suggesting a meal can have too much cilantro. I’m talking to you, Uncle Saul!!!
P.S. Spoiler Alert: Rob Lowe (a.k.a.: Robert, what a stretch!!!) died to go to “Parks and Recreation.” Oh, and Uncle Saul has AIDS - probably from hanging out in too many parks. Also, you should always use Revlon makeup if you have the unfortunate fate to go through chemo as a female or a drag queen.
