Reflections on Restoring Sanity and/or Fear

We went to the Jon Stewart / Stephen Colbert Rally because we needed a break from all the non-stop negativity on TV. We went because we are liberal and there is no other liberal rally we could go to (because there is no liberal leader in this country right now). We went because we wanted to show the Beckians that there are more of us than there are of them. We went to show Obama and his cabinet of corporate hacks that we exist. We went to show the news media that we can spell better than the Tea Partiers. We went to show America that, as Jon Stewart said, "we are facing hard times, not end times," and that we have a good sense of humor about things. We went because it was something to do.

Naturally, most people seemed more interested in restoring sanity than keeping fear alive (sorry, Stephen!).  Those that were afraid, were mostly afraid of Mama Grizzlies and of course, there was the classic phobia of clowns and also spiders. There were witches claiming not to be witches en mass.

The only other thing worth noting is that you will (as usual) never get an accurate picture of the attendance from the media or the National Park Service.  It made Glenn Beck's rally looks like an "Up With People" concert and these people ranged in age from six to well over sixty.  There were so many people in the Metro that I feared fainting for lack of oxygen.  Fortunately, despite the hippie references, liberals don't have B.O.  As a reference for attendance speculation, we attended the big anti-war rally back in 2005 which was believed to be a half million people and this truly surpassed it.  Everyone was well behaved, grown up and SANE.

Keep reminding this country that there are more of us than there are of THEM.  Those who couldn't get to DC this weekend can accomplish that on Tuesday, otherwise we could end up like THIS:

Latest in from the Park Service: It would take 100,000,000 Glenn Beck rallies to have the same number of people of color as 1 Jon Stewart rally
